Choosing a favorite Mexican restaurant in the desert is like trying to pick your favorite child—not only is it impossible, it’s just not fair. Luckily, the Greater Palm Springs area is overflowing with incredible spots to satisfy your taco cravings, margarita needs, and everything in between.
Locals here are fiercely loyal to their go-to places (and may even argue about which salsa reigns supreme), but instead of sparking a desert food feud, we’re simply sharing some of our personal favorites. These are the places we return to over and over—because they never disappoint.
Maracas – Palm Springs
You’ll often find Eliot and Gino here, posted up at their usual Friday table with a margarita in hand and a plate of tacos on the way. Maracas is a downtown Palm Springs staple with a festive vibe, solid drinks, and classic Mexican fare. It’s a great spot for people-watching and even better for starting the weekend off right.
Tac/Quila & Clandestino – Palm Springs
Owned by the same chef and team, these two sister restaurants serve up refined, Mexico City–inspired dishes with stunning attention to detail. Tac/Quila is the slightly more lively of the two, while Clandestino offers a quieter atmosphere and unbeatable views of the San Jacinto Mountains. Mike and Bettina can’t get enough—this is their go-to for date nights, celebrations, or just whenever they’re craving something delicious. You’ll also find Suzanne there soaking up the views and enjoying one of their signature Watermelon Margarita’s. From the ceviche to the short rib enchiladas, the menu is next-level!
El Jefe – The Saguaro, Palm Springs
Located inside the bold and colorful Saguaro Hotel, El Jefe is a fun, funky spot with a killer tequila selection and one of the best taco happy hours in town. The vibe is laid-back with a bit of edge, perfect for a casual night out or late-night taco run. The elote and carnitas tacos are crowd favorites, and the micheladas are always a hit.
Armando’s – Palm Desert
Known for strong margaritas and the kind of nachos that hit just right, Armando’s is a go-to when you're looking for a casual hang with friends or an easy dinner out. It's the kind of place where locals gather, stories are shared, and no one leaves hungry.
Pueblo Viejo Grill – Indio
Authentic and full of flavor, Pueblo Viejo is a longtime valley favorite. Whether you’re dining inside with family or grabbing takeout for a sunset picnic, the food always delivers. The vibe is relaxed, the portions are generous, and the salsa? Next level.
