For all our Desert Modern Design enthusiasts…. this is definitely some amazing news! A tour of this home was part of a collection of events honoring Elrod at Modernism Week in 2019.
While many of us may already be midcentury modern fans, there is still so much to learn about these beautiful homes in Old Las Palmas, Palm Springs.
This home, known primarily as Elrod’s “Escape” House, is a four-bedroom, five-bath home sitting just around the corner from the home owned by Leonardo Di Caprio and just down the street from the historic Kirk Douglas house. While it’s location is historic and ideal, it is the the history of architectural and design choices which make this home worth of interest and excitement.
This home was built in 1968 by the architect John Lautner, for Arthur Dea Elrod, Jr. who was an American interior designer. The 4,78 square foot home has been well preserved to continue on the tradition of mind century modern interior design that Elrod was famous for. Elrod loved experimenting with all the different textures and finishes which is primarily what he became known for. He also was big on very long, sinuous sofas (which you can see in the living room photo).
This home is a step back in time! And perfect for midcentury modern fans who were able to stay in this home as a vacation rental. With extensive outdoor entertainment area and the living room’s 14-foot ceilings with floor to ceiling windows, this home evoked the history and esthetic every modern enthusiast thinks of when coming to Palm Springs.
